Pruning and Grafting Apples and Pears - 2/10/09

Chileno Valley Ranch
Petaluma, CA

Thirty people attended a grafting and pruning workshop given by Paul Vossen, UCCE Marin & Sonoma Specialty Crop Advisor. Apple and pear rootstock was provided for attendees, who were advised to bring "new wood" from spring branches of 3/8" diameter for grafting as well as grafting tools. Also, grafting starts were provided from the Gale orchard for those who didn’t have apple grafts.

Paul gave a pruning demonstration and talked about apple tree cultivation. John Valenzuela of the Rare Fruit Growers Association also gave a demonstration of his grafting techniques.

Cost for the workshop was $30, which covered materials and lunch.
