Compost and soil carbon on Marin’s ranches

After four years of on-farm research to confirm and perfect the ability to sequester carbon and mitigate greenhouse gasses by applying carbon to pastures, the Marin Carbon Project partners are working with three local ranches to scale-up the use of this practice.  A total of 16 ranches applied for these three soft-launch opportunities, an indication of rancher interest in adding this practice to their land stewardship toolbox.  This soft-launch is as an intermediate step to take research results from the initial one-acre trials and apply them to pastures of 20 to 100 acres. The final step will be whole ranch application on many ranches across Marin.  Look for more information about this year’s outcomes and next steps of the Project to be coming soon.  In the interim, know that Marin’s farmers and ranchers are making positive contributions to the capture and long-term storage of carbon through their ranch stewardship.
