Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in Marin
CSA is a produce distribution model that connects farms and local consumers in a mutual, transparent relationship. CSA’s have been around for decades with some of the earliest examples coming from Japan in the 1960’s. Typically, CSA farms sell “subscriptions” to local households at the start of the season when capital is most in demand for seed, new equipment, soil amendments, etc. In return for purchasing an entire season’s-worth of produce up front, the customers will receive a weekly or bi-weekly delivery of produce featuring the full spectrum of what is ripe and ready. When nature cooperates and crops are booming, customers receive the full bounty. If misfortune befalls the farm in the form of disease, pests or drought, customers receive less. This element of shared risk lies at the heart of the model and constitutes an important part of the “Support” in Community Supported Agriculture.
